NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — October 31, 2026. The Newport Beach Police Department has received a $497,000 grant from California’s Office of Traffic Safety to support traffic enforcement and education aimed at reducing serious injuries and deaths.
In its October 21 announcement, the department describes initiatives including DUI checkpoints and patrols, operations targeting drivers using handheld phones, and additional attention to violations that endanger pedestrians and cyclists.
Which violations are targeted?
The city identifies speeding, failing to yield, running stop signs or red lights, improper turns and unsafe lane changes among the dangerous driving behaviors the program will address.
The grant is funding for a set of planned enforcement and education activities; it does not establish the exact date or location of an upcoming DUI checkpoint. Police announcements should not be interpreted as evidence of an unusually high crime rate in any specific neighborhood.
What drivers and families can do
Put phones away while driving, observe school-zone and crosswalk rules, and plan a safe ride home if drinking. For a suspected collision or immediate danger, call 911. Residents can learn about programs through Newport Beach’s official city website.
