NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — October 31, 2026. Newport Harbor’s major dredging program is intended to restore depth in federally managed navigation channels, with an estimated 900,000 cubic yards of sediment targeted for removal.
The city’s official project page states that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work in early December 2025. The original work period was estimated at about ten months.
Why does the harbor need dredging?
Natural movement of sediment reduces available depth in channels used by boats and commercial services. Periodic dredging is intended to return those channels to their federally authorized depths. The Corps maintains the federal channels; other parts of the harbor fall under different local or private authorities.
How is sediment handled?
The city says sampling from 2018 through 2024 found most dredged material suitable for approved ocean disposal. Some sediment was found unsuitable for open-ocean disposal and is planned to be reused in an enclosed fill project at the Port of Long Beach’s Pier G. This distinction is important: it does not mean that all sediment removed from Newport Harbor is treated the same way.
Is the project finished?
Because the original ten-month schedule extends toward fall 2026, the public should check the city’s current status map before assuming every channel is complete or unaffected. The city’s project contact is Public Works Manager Chris Miller, 949-644-3043.
