NEWPORT BEACH, ORANGE COUNTY — NOVEMBER 5, 2026. Newport Beach officials are urging waterfront residents to prepare now for exceptionally high tides expected around November 23–27. The warning follows coastal flooding during late October, when local tide levels reached about 8.4 feet, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times’ Daily Pilot.
Why the next cycle matters
City representatives told the publication that November’s peak levels could exceed October’s by more than a foot. Additional high-tide periods are anticipated around December 22–26 and again in January. A forecast of high tides does not guarantee flooding at every property; local elevation, seawalls, wind and wave conditions all affect the outcome.
What homeowners should inspect
The city is encouraging owners in low-lying and waterfront neighborhoods to check seawalls, docks and private flood defenses before the next cycle. A low or damaged wall can allow water onto neighboring property and streets. Municipal crews have been preparing sand berms, stormwater equipment and sandbags in known vulnerable areas.
Flooded electric vehicles and batteries
Officials also warn residents to move electric vehicles, electric bicycles, golf carts and battery-powered equipment away from flood-prone locations where feasible. Saltwater exposure can create a delayed lithium-ion battery fire risk. Do not operate or charge a submerged device until it has been inspected by a qualified professional.
Long-term shoreline questions
Residents’ calls for higher seawalls must be weighed against coastal rules and potential impacts on beaches and habitat. The California Coastal Commission reviews certain shoreline armoring proposals; homeowners should not assume a new wall can be installed without permits.
